Liam De Rosa Deepens His Musical Practice at Eastman
Liam De Rosa has completed his first year at the Eastman School of Music, where he describes the year as one filled with “so many wonderful discoveries.” During his studies, he performed a non-degree recital, continued developing his skills as a violist, and discovered a particular passion for chamber music and historical performance.
This summer, Liam expanded his professional experience by performing around Rhode Island, where he lives when he is not at school. His engagements included performances with the Providence Singers and the Music on the Hill Ensemble. His work with Music on the Hill was especially meaningful: Liam was the first winner of the organization’s Scholarship Competition in 2023, and this summer he had the honor of returning as a professional member of the ensemble.
After completing his summer performances, Liam returned to the Bowdoin International Music Festival, where he continued his studies with distinguished musicians. He studied viola with Professor Che-Yen Chen of UCLA and the Ehnes Quartet, and chamber music with Professor Tracy Rowell of Oberlin Conservatory and esteemed harpist Dr. June Han.
For Liam, the festival offered an opportunity to explore his musical identity on a deeper level. He shared that Bowdoin allowed him to “discover myself as a musician on a more personal level” while performing chamber music that was new to him. These experiences expanded both his understanding of music and his “concept of sound world and knowledge,” further inspiring his interest in collaborative performance.
From his first professional performances to his continued studies at Eastman and Bowdoin, Liam is building a diverse musical practice grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to continued growth.
