Kyo believes that creativity is a collaborative effort, influenced by cultural, historical, and linguistic factors shaped by countless individuals over time. She sees her writing as a contribution to a broader literary landscape, aiming to inspire future creators and broaden understanding of the human experience. Despite her subjects often delving into challenging themes like war, colonialism, and queer identity, Kyo's intention is to foster connection, unravel personal and cultural histories, and amplify unheard voices.
Beyond writing, Kyo is driven by a personal mission to advocate for LGBTQ+ youth rights, inspired by her own experiences of discrimination. A pivotal moment occurred when she encountered a graphic novel that resonated deeply with her struggles, prompting her to use literature as a tool for social change. Upon returning to South Korea, Kyo plans to fight for queer rights through both literature and political activism.
Kyo's dedication to writing was reinforced during her attendance at the Kenyon Review’s Young Writers Workshop, where she found inspiration and camaraderie among fellow passionate youth. This transformative experience motivated her to pursue further growth at the Interlochen Center for the Arts’ Creative Writing Camp. By immersing herself in such programs, Kyo seeks to deepen her understanding of the craft and contribute meaningfully to both the literary world and social justice efforts.
