Kannen Glanz Artistic Journey And Bright Future In Dance
Kannen Glanz, a 2019 AQF Dance scholarship recipient, has achieved remarkable milestones since receiving the scholarship. He recently graduated from The Juilliard School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance, where he engaged in practice, performance, and creation of movement with both domestic and international choreographers. During his time at Juilliard, Kannen performed works by renowned choreographers such as Tiler Peck, Ohad Naharin, Rena Butler, Trisha Brown, Jamar Roberts, Justin Peck, and Jessica Lang. He also choreographed his own independent projects through the school's Workshop performances.
One of Kannen's choreographic highlights was his 2022 work Filling The Space In Between, a collaboration with Juilliard composer Jacob Beranek for Juilliard's annual Choreographers and Composers concert. Additionally, two of his independent projects were selected for Juilliard's Choreographic Honors program, leading to performances on Juilliard's Lincoln Center Main Stage.
In his fourth year, Kannen participated in a Professional Exchange Program, similar to a study abroad program, dancing as a Second Company Member with Cincinnati Ballet while completing his BFA. During this time, he performed works by Gerald Arpino, George Balanchine, Victoria Morgan, Anna Marie-Holmes, and Jodie Gates, and choreographed commissioned work for the Second Company and Cincinnati Ballet Academy.
Kannen further developed his skills through various professional development opportunities, including contemporary and contemporary ballet programs at The School at Jacob's Pillow. Here, he performed works by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Jennifer Archibald, Sidra Bell, Rena Butler, and Antoine Vereecken with Studio Wayne McGregor. He earned the Lorna Strassler Award for Student Excellence, which champions performance skill excellence, a demonstrated unwavering dedication to the arts, and vision of their role in dance.
Kannen also expanded his international experience by traveling to Italy to dance at Orsolina28 with Ballet BC's Artistic Director, Medhi Walerski. They prepared repertory works and created new material to share with the Moncalvo community. When not dancing, he worked as a Resident Counselor for Boston Ballet's Summer Dance Program, nurturing his passion for arts administration.
Currently, Kannen is in residency at La Biennale di Venezia, a cultural institution in Venice, Italy, as one of 16 members of the College Danza under the artistic direction of Wayne McGregor. He will perform new creations by Wayne McGregor, Cristina Caprioli, and Javier Sauco and Enrique Flores at the 18th International Festival of Contemporary Dance, marking his European dance debut.
Next, Kannen will return to Jacob's Pillow as one of eight participants in The School's Choreography Fellowship under the direction of Risa Steinberg and Dianne McIntyre, where he will continue to develop his artistic voice as a choreographer.
