Hanniel Botella at SAIC Early College Program Summer Institute
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Early College Program Summer Institute (ECPSI) gave Hanniel Botella the opportunity to immerse himself in one of the country's leading pre-college visual arts programs. While exploring Chicago's creative landscape, he gained a deeper appreciation for the city's street art, graffiti, and hip-hop culture, drawing inspiration from the energy and identity of the community around him.
Before the program even began, Hanniel had made an important decision: every piece he created during the summer would reflect the values that guide his life. Throughout the experience, he centered his artwork on his faith, using the opportunity to express his beliefs while continuing to develop his artistic voice.
By combining personal conviction with creative exploration, Hanniel left the program with new perspectives on both his work and his purpose as an artist. The experience reinforced the direction he hopes to pursue as he continues growing creatively.
"I had already decided that all my work would be centered around God as He is the most important figure in my life. I believe it was for that purpose that I was allowed to go to Chicago and make art."
Supported by an Anthony Quinn Foundation Visual Arts Scholarship, Hanniel's summer at SAIC helped him strengthen his artistic practice while creating work that reflects both his creativity and his values.
