Willie finds it challenging to put into words his love and passion for music. Despite hours of contemplation, he struggles to articulate profound statements about his artistry. For Willie, music is more than just a means of channeling emotions; it is a journey of exploration, discovering new emotions within the art form itself. Although he can simplify these emotions as love, happiness, and comfort, it is through jazz that they take on a myriad of nuanced shades.
In his quest to further his love for jazz, Willie plans to spend the next summer in New York City, the mecca of jazz. Attending New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development will place him within walking distance of prestigious jazz clubs like The Blue Note, The Village Vanguard, and Smalls. Not only will he have the opportunity to experience the vibrant jazz scene, but he will also receive guidance from renowned musicians such as David Pietro, Wayne Krantz, and Rich Shemaria. The expertise and feedback he will gain from these instructors in the jazz capital of the world are invaluable to his growth as a musician.
Beyond honing his musicianship and gaining valuable playing experience, Willie sees the NYU Summer Jazz Improv Workshop as a way to find his place in the music world. Through various learning and performing experiences, he has gained clarity about his future in music. Attending this workshop is another step towards solidifying his path and uncovering his role within the realm of music. After carefully considering programs across the globe, Willie is convinced that New York City is the perfect destination for his musical aspirations.
