Stephanie Yen

2018 Instrumental Scholarship Recipient

Stephanie has discovered the magical power of music through her ten years of studying the piano. As an artist, she finds immense joy in sharing music and its narratives, which are filled with unique colors and emotions. Stephanie appreciates the individual and universal aspects of music, recognizing that everyone has their own personal experience with it while also acknowledging its ability to bring people together. Classical music, with its stirring melodies, particularly allows her to embrace both these facets. She interprets pieces in a way that resonates with her personally and then performs to connect with others, allowing them to have their own unique experiences with the music.

Stephanie is drawn to the Credo Oberlin program for chamber music instruction. It offers daily coaching with the esteemed faculty at Oberlin's Conservatory of Music. However, what sets Credo apart for her is its incorporation of spirit and service. The program includes service projects where students share their music and "Morning Sings" that foster a sense of community. Stephanie believes that music should contribute to individuals' lives and communities in meaningful ways, and Credo aligns perfectly with her vision.

Attending Credo would fulfill Stephanie's technical and artistic aspirations. She expects to gain valuable instrumental experience and mentorship from the rigorous program. Moreover, it presents a unique opportunity for her to delve into chamber music, an area she has always been fascinated by but has not had the chance to explore. Credo's focus on the emotional role of music and the power it holds resonates deeply with Stephanie. She hopes to grow as both an artist and an individual through the program, connecting with fellow musicians from around the world and sharing in the magic of music together.
