MacKenzie Kade Patrick

2014 Media Arts Scholarship Recipient

Mackenzie harbored a secret about her passion for video game design, fearing judgment and disappointment from her family and friends. However, as she grew older, she found it increasingly difficult to evade questions about her future. When finally confronted with "the question," she mustered the courage to assert her desire to design video games. Mackenzie believes that video games not only provide entertainment but also enhance reasoning skills, reflexes, and creativity.

To pursue her dream, Mackenzie began researching degree programs and discovered that few colleges offer a major in video game design. However, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) caught her attention with its Interactive Design and Game Development program. Despite her excitement, her parents expressed concerns about the perceived limitations of attending an art school. Fortunately, Mackenzie learned about SCAD's Rising Star program, which allows high school students to explore if an art degree and SCAD align with their aspirations. The program offers college-level art classes and a month-long on-campus experience.

Mackenzie's journey highlights her determination to pursue her passion for video game design despite initial apprehensions. Through her dedication to her art and her pursuit of opportunities like the SCAD Rising Star program, she is actively working towards her dreams. The financial assistance provided by the AQF scholarship would be instrumental in enabling her to take the next steps towards her artistic aspirations and validate her skills to herself and her family.
