Adam Katz

2018 Theatre Scholarship Recipient

Adam has always aspired to work in film, but until recently, he had only been involved in theatre. Determined to step out of his comfort zone, he sought real acting opportunities outside of high school productions. His first venture into the world of film acting was as an extra in a commercial, which provided him with a glimpse of what it's like to work in front of a professional camera. Wanting to further expand his knowledge and skills, Adam auditioned for a lead role in a short film called Elmer's Story, directed by Lucasfilm's head animator Mathieu Dimuro. Surprisingly, he landed the part, igniting his hunger to delve deeper into the world of film acting.

Adam will be attending Carnegie Mellon Summer Pre-College Theatre Program, which offers various drama programs. However, he ultimately decided to choose the Film program as his focus for the summer, prioritizing a learning experience that would broaden his understanding of the craft. He aims to grasp the nuances that distinguish film acting from theatre acting, believing that this understanding is crucial for delivering the best possible performances.

The program at Carnegie Mellon also offers the opportunity to explore writing and directing, which Adam finds immensely valuable. Working under the guidance of industry professionals, he anticipates gaining insights into the collaborative process between writers, directors, and actors. Moreover, he is excited about the chance to experience an independent film studio environment, becoming familiar with the equipment involved in filmmaking. Through this program, Adam aims to deepen his understanding of film acting, expand his creative abilities, and gain a comprehensive view of the filmmaking process.
