Meet Emilie Sommers, 2012 Scholarship Recipient
Emilie Sommers is a photographer and printmaker from Albuquerque, NM who is currently in the 11th grade at Albuquerque Academy. She will be using her scholarship to attend the Sam Fox School of Art & Design at Washington University in St. Louis Portfolio Plus Program this summer. What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?
It would be amazing to have the opportunity to become a professional photographer/printmaker/designer. Since I am also intrigued by art history, becoming a curator or even an independent gallery owner would all be things I would potentially aspire to become.
What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?
I swim competitively year round for Lobo Aquatic Club as well as for the varsity team at my high school during the winter. I adore yoga as well as the outdoors: cycling, hiking, camping, backpacking, rafting, among others.
What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?
I have a condition called scoliosis; my spine is an "S" shape. I wore a back brace for three years (from 5th-7th grade) and it has significantly influenced some of my ideas in regards to portraiture and the human figure.
