Richard Carbotti Memorial Scholarship

Richard Carbotti, long-time AQF supporter and active member of our Advisory Board, passed away on January 21, 2014.

The founder of Perfect Surroundings in Newport, R.I., Richard was a pioneer and leader in event design.A native New Yorker, Richard studied interior design at famed design school Parsons in Manhattan followed by advanced work at Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications, which trained him to interpret design in the commercial world.

The U.S. Navy brought him to Newport, R.I. Once there he landed a job in 1983 designing events for the international syndicates vying to participate in the legendary America's Cup yacht race. Richard's smash debut landed him on the national scene with coverage of his stunning parties in blockbuster magazines. In 1985, he launched his event firm Perfect Surroundings, which has grown to include an office in Miami.

We remember our dear friend, Richard, and the many lives he touched with his gracious spirit. His memory lives on in his beautiful family and his legacy continues through the Anthony Quinn Foundation's Richard Carbotti Memorial Scholarship. Malcolm Grear Memorial Scholarship

Malcolm Grear, beloved friend and a founding member of the Anthony Quinn Foundation Board of Directors passed away on January 24, 2016.

Malcolm played a vital role as designer and educator in the field of visual communication for fifty-five years.  He taught in the Rhode Island School of Design's graphic design department from 1960 to 1998 and was an internationally recognized leader, whose work encompassed corporate identity and branding programs, exhibit design; environmental graphics, educational, cultural and corporate publications and print material; product and packaging design and interactive design. He was the CEO of Malcolm Grear Designers based in Providence, Rhode Island since 1960.

The Anthony Quinn Foundation is indebted to Malcolm for his work in creating the Foundation's logo, designing many of the exhibition catalogues and invitations and the design and layout of the book, Anthony Quinn's Eye: A Lifetime of Creating and Collecting Art.  After serving as a member of the Board of Directors for four years, Malcolm continued to serve on the Foundation's Advisory Council and was instrumental in helping to lay the groundwork for the Foundation's signature Scholarship Program.

Malcolm's love for his work is best stated in his own words:

“I am a lucky man. Not by design, but through design. I have gained a life of friendships, respectful affections, delightful collaborations — all born of my work, which in itself, in its daily texture and visual diversity, brings pleasure to my soul. There is nothing I would rather do than graphic design.”

— Malcolm Grear

AQF is fortunate to have been the benefactor of Malcolm's talent and friendship for the past decade. To honor his memory, a scholarship was awarded in his name in 2016.
