Steven, reflecting on his journey, acknowledges that his transformation into an artist scholar was not accidental. Overcoming challenges, he has progressed from a lost and angry boy to the lead actor in school productions at Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts (TAPA). His recent role in Prospect High: Brooklyn has brought him to a place of focused tranquility, and his exploration of Shakespeare has shaped him as both an actor and a student. Steven has discovered his true passion in theatre.
The arts have played a significant role in Steven's life since his early years. Using colored pencils as his tools, he found empowerment and an outlet for his overwhelming anger. Drawing allowed him to communicate and understand emotions without the need for words. As he grew older, however, Steven lost his connection to his art and his passion. Recognizing this, his mother enrolled him at TAPA, where a teacher identified his natural talent for acting. Initially drawn to filmmaking, Steven eventually rediscovered his passion for theatre with the guidance of Mr. White, TAPA's Theatre Artist in Residence. Acting became like bringing a drawing to life for him.
Steven has found focus, self-discovery, and serenity through his involvement in the performing arts. He recognizes that portraying a character is more than just make-believe; it requires feeling the emotions of the character and their role. His mentor at TAPA has taught him that a performance is like a slowly drawn image, capable of being interpreted differently by each person. Inspired by his self-discovery and passion, Steven aims to take his artistry to the next level by joining "The Collaborative" program at Trinity Rep, a resident theater company in Providence. He seeks to expand his knowledge, grow as an actor, and keep the flames of passion for theater burning brightly.
